Fungus Foray
MIDDLETON WOODS FUNGUS FORAY – SATURDAY 14th OCTOBER 2017
The day began somewhat miserable and overcast but the overnight rain was behind us by the time we set off from the Ilkley Lido Car Park into Middleton Woods at 10-00am. Our Leader was WNS member Andrew Woodall who is a local fungi expert as well as being a keen general naturalist. Despite the dull weather some 27 hardy WNS members and several visitors came to see what we could find. With this number in train there was no shortage of eager eyes to search and draw Andrew’s attention to the wide variety of fungi that can be found in this ancient woodland. Fungi enthusiasts Mike and Joyce Clerk and Bruce Brown were particularly effective at discovering interesting specimens off the beaten track so that we were never short of opportunities for Andrew to demonstrate his well-honed identification skills.
Our walk took us through a number of differing habitats in the wood as we climbed to the higher reaches finishing back at the car park around 12-30pm.
We identified 47 species in total which was generally agreed represented a very good haul. The full list is given below.
The Society would like to take this opportunity to thank Andy for an excellent morning in every respect. His knowledge, enthusiasm and leadership skills do ensure a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining experience for expert and non-expert alike.
